Call it Game Of Thrones on drugs now by all means, but give it time. Britannia has all the bonkers makings of a show that's very much its own.

Britannia, which is weird and druggy and at times howling mad, is rather funny. It definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it is a bit of a riot. You might not expect that of something that has extreme violence as its meat.

Britannia is the kind of programme in which you need to keep your wits entirely about you in order to keep track of the games of three-dimensional chess every character is playing or abandon them altogether and just enjoy.

Is it the new Game of Thrones? Too early to say but I'm hoping for a bit more humour as the series goes on.

It was like being at a very muddy rock festival with added eye gougings and throat slittings.

The female characters are fantastically strong, from Zoë Wanamaker's blood-curdling Queen Antedia to indomitable princess Kerra, played by Kelly Reilly like someone with the sun permanently in her eyes.

If you crave swords, sorcery and sweary heathens Britannia offers big bonkers entertainment by the bucketload.

This is Game of Thrones written by depressed hobbits.

It's madder than a box of frogs, and perhaps more like a crazed fever dream -- a fever dream that mashes up Game Of Thrones with Horrible Histories, and that's the closest I can get.

It behoves me to say quite firmly that Britannia is the barmiest thing I've seen on TV since just about forever.
