Kedi (Kedi: des chats et des hommes) [Sub: Eng]

Description
KEDi is not a documentary about house cats or the strays you occasionally see in your back yard. KEDi is a film about the hundreds of thousands of cats who have roamed the metropolis of Istanbul freely for thousands of years, wandering in and out of people's lives, impacting them in ways only an animal who lives between the worlds of the wild and the tamed can. Cats and their kittens bring joy and purpose to those they choose, giving people an opportunity to reflect on life and their place in it. In Istanbul, cats are the mirrors to ourselves. 'Cats - tabbies, calicos, angoras, Norwegian forest cats; ginger cats, grey cats, black cats, white cats, black and white cats - all kinds of cats, roam the city, free, without a human master. Some fend for themselves, scavenging from dumpsters, living in abandoned buildings, others are cared for by communities of people, pampered with the best cat food and given shelter for the cold months. Cats have been a part of the city for thousands of years, and so, everyone who grows up in Istanbul or lives in Istanbul has a story about a cat. Stories that are memorable; sometimes scary, sometimes spiritual, but always very personal. Street cats are such a big part of the culture that when US president Barack Obama visited Istanbul, part of his tour included a stop at the Hagia Sophia to visit its famous cat, Gli. Cats are as integral to the identity of Istanbul as its monuments, the Bosporus, tea, raki and fish restaurants.'

Those who don't especially like cats - or Istanbul, for that matter - might not get a lot out of Turkish director Ceyda Torun's love letter to the feline population of her native city. For everyone else, it should be an almost unadulterated pleasure.

I think cat lovers will get a big kick out of this; others will probably appreciate its humanistic tone more so than the animals.

The city teems with felines and the humans who are momentarily or forever transformed through sweet encounters. Sadly, encroaching urbanisation is a threat. Kedi is bittersweet balm for the weary.

Though pleasant to watch, Torun's feature debut feels more like a meandering montage than a structured narrative, and it could easily be half as long.

At 80 minutes, Torun's film feels a bit overlong, but it is as soft and warm as a kitten.

Kedi ('cat' in Turkish) is much more than a cute film showing these felines' day-to-day lives.

Cats wander in and out of frame; humans speculate on whether the local cats are ambitious or arrogant; Turkish music spills onto the soundtrack; and there's more than one growler of a catfight.
